The Distributed Multimedia Systems (DMMS) Group at the Department of Informatics (IFI) at the University of Oslo (UiO) seeks well qualified applicants for 1-2 PhD research fellowships in the CESAR project. Start date as soon as possible. The duration of the position is 3 years, or 4 years with 25 % compulsory work.

Within the framework of the position duties might be assigned such as course administration and teaching, master student supervision, and facilitation of seminars and workshops for PhD students. No one can be appointed as a PhD fellowship for more than one specified period at the same institution.

The position is funded through the CESAR project. The CESAR project performs interdisciplinary research (computer science and medicine) to enable monitoring of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) at home for everybody. Applications need to be aligned with the CESAR research themes and agendas (project proposal available on request).

Job description

Modern smart phones and low-cost minimal invasive sensors are a promising platform to enable OSA monitoring at home. We aim to accommodate improved diagnosis of OSA by development of new software solutions using machine learning techniques to bridge state-of-the-art consumer electronic devices with appropriate sensors to supplement the classical polysomnography. We investigate the usefulness of supervised and unsupervised learning (data mining) techniques to identify interesting data patterns that might lead to new knowledge in OSA research and to support the design and engineering of the on-line analysis tool. The design of the on-line analysis tool is driven by the goal to enable individuals with limited computing skill to customize and personalize the on-line analysis.

In order to be qualified for these positions the candidate must document the ability to be able to produce research results on high scientific level. The candidate must document good knowledge and experience in at least one (but preferably several) of the following CESAR-related topics:

Database Systems and Data Mining

Complex Event Processing

Mobile Systems and their evaluation

Operating Systems

CESAR is a research project with multiple Norwegian partners, and all project members will have close contact with patients at OUH for the data acquisition and evaluation. Therefore, good Norwegian language skills are essential.

Location: Blindern, Oslo, Norway; divided between Ifi/UiO and Oslo University Hospital (OUH). The candidate will be employed by Ifi/UiO and will also have workings tasks at OUH-Rikshospitalet (10 min. walk apart).

PhD fellowship details

The PhD candidates will be temporarily hired by Ifi/UiO for three years (or four years with 25% teaching obligations), admitted as a PhD student at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UIO, as well as be integrated into the research group at OUH. As part of the academic training, the candidate must take courses totaling 30 credits, a min. of 5 of which must be a course in research ethics, academic theories and methods, the others to be chosen in conjunction with the candidate and supervisors.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the PhD program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Position code 1017,  salary NOK ۴۳۲ ۷۰۰ – ۴۸۹ ۳۰۰ per year, depending on qualifications and seniority

PhD fellowship requirements

We seek a highly motivated individual holding a M.Sc. in Computer Science (or another equivalent degree), with a minimum of a B average for courses at the Masters’ level and for the Master Thesis. The candidate must be comfortable working in an interdisciplinary environment, as well as be proactive and willing to solve practical problems.
