Project Description

The analysis of soft materials (polymers, organics, biomaterials, drug-delivery devices) at the sub-micrometre scale is being revolutionised by a number of key new techniques, some pioneered at Newcastle. We have secured major investment from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council for state-of-the-art instruments giving access to buried interfaces at sub-nanometre resolution. Development of analytical methods in the Helium Ion Microscope: materials structure identification with unprecedented resolution

Focussed Ion Beam (FIB) machining and computed tomography of semiconductor stacks

Sectioning and subsequent analysis of biological structures by neon FIB milling, including (for example) core-shell nanoparticles in cells

The principal instruments for this work are a new Helium Ion Microscope with galium FIB and analytical capability, a new Time-of-Flight SIMS instrument and a state-of-the-art Angle-Resolved Photoelectron Spectrometer. Collaborators include: scholarship daily news in www.rightman.ir
