How many words are there in the English language?

There is no single sensible answer to this question. But the best way to learn many English words easily is to learn the roots of words.

Roots, prefixes and suffixes are the essential building blocks of words. They are the most essential strategies for unlocking the meaning of new words.

Examples:

Root:  celer

–   Meaning: fast

–   for example: accelerate > to increase the speed of

Prefix:  mis-

–   Meaning: wrongly

–   for example: misspell > to spell a word wrongly

Suffix:  -less

–   Meaning: without

–   for example: hopeless > having no hope

Learning roots, prefixes and suffixes helps you have the tools needed for decoding difficult words and breaking down unfamiliar words into segments that are easily understood.
