Adhesive bonds play an important role in the substructures of wind turbine blades. The design, the quality of the bondlines and the mechanical properties of the adhesive material are essential for the strength and life time of the blade. DTU Wind intends to increase its knowledge in the field of “sub-component analysis for rotor blades” and initiates a project on characterisation of adhesives and bonds used in wind turbine blades. The motivation is to investigate the mechanical performance of both adhesive and bonds, i.e., on both material and sub-component levels. New types of adhesives should be compared with conventional adhesives with the aim of replacing the latter with more cost efficient materials that have comparable or improved properties (e.g. strength, fracture toughness, cohesive laws, fatigue lifetime etc.). scholarship daily news in www.rightman.ir
Job description
The position will be both modelling and experimental efforts in fracture mechanic analysis and evaluation of the performance of adhesive joints in wind turbine blades under static and cyclic loading. This includes modelling and tests on the materials level e.g. adhesive DCB (double cantilever beam) specimens, characterizing adhesive joints under different mixed mode conditions), which can be used to deduce cohesive laws to be subsequently used in models predicting performance and failure on large scale (e.g. sub-components). Sub-components that realistically represent e.g. a generic trailing edge joint should be designed and manufactured. Similar fibre lay-up and adhesives as used for the DCB tests will be adopted for comparison purposes. A suitable load application system should be thought out which allows the sub-components to be tested under service like conditions. Numerical modelling of the behaviour of the substructures must be carried out using the cohesive laws based on the experimental observations and measurements. scholarship daily news in www.rightman.ir
The project are carried through in close collaboration with researchers and technicians of the Section of Composites and Materials Mechanics doing basic material research, qualification and characterisation and the Section of Wind Turbines modelling and designing structures and substructures in blades. scholarship daily news in www.rightman.ir
