–  Ho do you read 1 / 4 ?

Read fractions using the cardinal number for the numerator and the ordinal number for the denominator.

Ex.:  ۱ / ۳
Written : 1 / 3
Said : one third
( ۱ is numerator and 3 is denominator )

make the ordinal number plural if the numerator is larger than one.

۳ / ۴
Written : 3 / 4
Said : three fourths

۵ / ۶
Written : 5 / 6
Said : five sixths

Exception :

The above rules apply to all fractions except when the denominator is 2 :

– ۲ is read “half” if the numerator is one.

– ۲ is read “halves” if the numerator is larger than one.

Written : 1 / 2
Said : one half

۳ / ۲
Written : 3 / 2
Said : three halves

The cardinal numbers (one, two, three, etc.) are adjectives referring to quantity.

Ex.: I must have asked you twenty times to be quiet.

The ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc.) refer to distribution.

Ex.: He went to Australia for the third time this year.
