How to learn collocations?

First, try to recognize different types of collocations.

For example, some verbs have particular adverbs which regularly collocate with them.

Example : “Place gently”

He placed the beautiful vase gently on the window ledge.

Types of collocations:

–   Verbs and adverbs

Smile proudly

Place gently

Pull steadily

Whisper softly

–   Adjectives and nouns

bright color

brief chat

major problem

key issue

–   Nouns and verbs

to create an opportunity

to launch the product (introduce the product)

The two companies merged.

–   Noun + noun (with the pattern of : a … of …)

A sense of pride

A surge of anger

–   Verbs and expressions with prepositions

I was filled with horror.

The little girl burst into tears. (suddenly started crying)

–   Adverbs and adjectives

I am fully aware. (I know well)

They are happily married.

–   Answer to question No. TC-V-Q1 in Lesson 11:

۱- leave the university (type: nouns and verbs)

۲- find a way (type: nouns and verbs)
