Lesson 11 > Vocabulary > Collocations 

According to the lesson 7, you understood that learning collocations is an important part of learning the vocabulary of English language. Some collocations are fixed or very strong.

Example:

take a photo

While no word other than “take” collocates with “photo” to give the same meaning.

Sometimes, a pair of words may not be absolutely wrong, and people will understand what is meant, but it may not be the natural, normal collocation.

If someone says:

I did a few mistakes.

Natives will understand, but a fluent speaker of English would probably say:

I made a few mistakes.

* Bear in mind that learning collocations is possible just by repeating.

More useful collocations:

Part A :

powerful engine

become famous

get a job

take up a profession

piece of advice

strictly forbidden (not : strongly forbidden)

valid passport

ancient monument

pitch dark

Part B :

Have a nice day

substantial meal (not : big meal)

watch TV

write a song

live music

play the guitar

Part C :

make :

–   make a mistake

–   make a decision

–   make an effort

–   make a recording

heavy :

–   heavy snow

–   heavy cold

have :

–   have access

–   have breakfast (eat)

bitterly :

–   bitterly disappointed

–   bitterly cold
