PhD fellow in Vadose zone geochemistry
Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in vadose zone geochemistry commencing 15.09.2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Description of the scientific environment
The project will be carried out in close collaboration with scientists and technicians at The Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (IGN) and the department of geochemistry at The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS). The project will be anchored at IGN in the Terrestrial Ecosystem Analysis Group that carries out research to improve understanding of physical, geochemical and biological processes in terrestrial ecosystems in order to assess environmental impacts (http://ign.ku.dk/english/research/geography/terrestrial-ecosystem-analysis). The Terrestrial Ecosystem Analysis Group host currently eight PhD-students and provides a vivid and motivating scientific as well as social environment for a successful PhD-study.
This PhD-project, entitled “A new stable isotope approach to examine turnover of organic compounds in the vadose zone (Cisotop)” has the overall goal to develop new methods and establish new knowledge that can be used in the prediction of future impacts of human activity on the quality of ground- and surface water. The Cisotop project includes field work and laboratory studies using modern soil geochemical tools combined with state-of-the-art stable isotope methods (gas isotope EA-IRMS). The aim is to develop a method to differentiate various pools of soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) and test of the method using soil cores excavated from field sites, and by computer-based modeling assess the reductive capacity of organic matter in the vadose zone.
Geochemical processes in the vadose zone are essential for the quality of ground water and surface water by removal and retardation of contaminants such as e.g. nitrate. However, the inherent pool of reduced compounds (e.g., bioavailable organic matter, pyrite, and ferrous iron) has been exhausted and the renewable source of DOM is a very important reduced compound in the geochemical vadose zone environment of today.
